Job description

The research and teaching group Psychology, Health and Technology (PHT) at the University of Twente is involved in research and education with regard to the use of technologies to support health and wellbeing. We develop, evaluate and implement theory-based interventions to influence behaviour, using value sensitive and persuasive technologies (web-based, mobile, gaming etc.). We work both from a psychology and an engineering perspective and cooperate with other scientific disciplines, based on the Vision 2030 of the University of Twente. We are currently seeking an assistant /associate professor (F/M, 0.84 FTE) in the area of technology in mental health care.

The challenge

Technology plays an increasingly important role in mental health care. The use of online, eHealth, mHealth, sensing and virtual reality technologies holds important promises to make interventions more effective and bring them closer to the everyday life of clients. A main challenge in fulfilling this promise is that it needs a transformation in mental health care. Innovative technologies need to match values and competences of clients but also ask for new competences and new ways of working of mental health professionals. Based on your own experience as a licensed health care psychologist working with technology in everyday practice, you will contribute to education and research in this exciting new field.

 Your research will focus on the design and implementation of engaging technologies to promote mental health and well-being. You will work in close collaboration with mental health care institutes and professional and client organizations. You contribute to interdisciplinary research in the Faculty Behavioral, Management, and Social Sciences, the Netherlands School of Regional Healthcare Transformation, and the university-wide TechMed Centre. Applying for research grants, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and PhD supervision belong to your tasks.

As a teacher, you will contribute to modules in the Bachelor Psychology and to courses in the Mastertrack Positive Clinical Psychology and Technology. Furthermore, you will supervise Bachelor and Master theses that you can focus on your research themes.


  • You hold a PhD, in (clinical) psychology;
  • You are a licensed psychologist (gz-psycholoog or klinisch psycholoog/psychotherapeut);
  • You have experience in design and research in innovative technologies in mental health care;
  • You are an experienced teacher, preferably holding a University Teaching Qualification or an international equivalent;
  • You are an interdisciplinary team worker, collaborating with scholars from different backgrounds in social sciences and technology;
  • You have a good publication and presentation track record in peer-reviewed international journals;
  • You have excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • You are fluent in English.

We offer

You will be appointed for two years with the prospect of a permanent position. The contract hours we offer are minimum 16 maximum 32 hours per week. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem; internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda.
