Job description

A multidisciplinary team from the University of Twente together with several universities and industrial partners, is working together in the Smart cycling programme with several projects. This programme is a key pillar of a sustainable, safe, and effective society. It is about the bicycles, the infrastructure and their users, constantly interacting with each other, in real time, across the entire, networked transport architecture. Real-time data collection and analysis with the intelligent technologies will make cycling safer, more comfortable, and healthier. This programme will increase the take-up of cycling, which will reduce CO2 emission, noise, improve air quality and increase public space. Our envisioned Smart Biking eco-system will observe reality, learn how to improve it, and change its services to adapt.

This requires technologies and mechanisms to allow monitoring the bike, understanding the cyclist and the context, as well as data sharing between cyclists, industry, service providers, government, and urban planners. One essential research topic is to design the reliable, robust and low-cost communication mechanism to allow bicycles communicating with each other, with other road users (cars, pedestrians, etc.) and with the urban transport infrastructure (e.g. traffic lights) to enable secure/efficient information sharing and make bicycle use safer, more reliable, and comfortable. Both simulation and extensive experiments will be carried out to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the system.

We are seeking a motivated candidate to work on this research topic for 4 years full-time at the Pervasive Systems Research group within the department of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the UT in the Netherlands. The prospective PhD candidate is expected to perform high quality and internationally visible research that gets published at top tier conferences and journals.

Profile

  • The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in either Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, or Mathematics;
  • Experience in relevant topics such as wireless communication, networking, embedded systems, signal processing, machine learning and deep learning. Experience with networked embedded devices is a plus;
  • Interested in solving analytical tasks and develop prototypes, combined with intermediate programming skills (e.g. in R, Python or C-something);
  • A strong personality to defend your research ideas not only at university, but also in an industrial context;
  • Good communication skills and a strong interest in operating at the crossroads of different disciplines;
  • Excellent proficiency in English (C1; above IELTS 7 or equivalent);
  • You are able to do independent research and have publication skills.

We offer

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include:

  • A fulltime PhD position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year;
  • Full status as an employee at the UT, including pension and health care benefits;
  • The salary will range from € 2.395 (1st year) to € 3.061,- (4th year) per month, plus a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
  • Excellent facilities for professional and personal development;
