Job description

Optimal multi-appointment planning is of utmost importance for timely treatment of patients with complicated treatment protocols and for treatment providers to efficiently allocate scarce resources. Markov Decision Theory is one of the fundamental mathematical pillars of on-line multi-appointment planning. As the decision problems are, in general, too large for exact solutions, heuristic methods are really important for practical application of Markov Decision Theory. In this respect, reinforcement learning is a key-enabling technique to determine near-optimal strategies for on-line multi-appointment planning. In this position, you will combine mathematical research on the foundations of reinforcement learning with applications of multi-appointment planning in healthcare.

Embedding and impact:
The project is embedded in the Stochastic Operations Research group and the Center for Healthcare Operations Improvement and Research (CHOIR). Projects range from theory to practice working towards the implementation of our results in healthcare organizations.

As a Postdoc, you will develop a close relationship with hospitals in our network of partnering hospitals that will be a steppingstone for collaboration in applied research projects. In addition, you will be embedded as a researcher-in-residence in one of our partnering hospitals one day per week. You will support our team in the acquisition and supervision of applied research funding through two-year PDEng projects as well as PhD and MSc projects. Your three-year appointment will enable you to supervise your acquired practical PDEng projects to their completion. Also, you will have ample opportunities and support to develop and submit a personal grant proposal for personal funding in, e.g., the ERC or NWO-Talentprogram.


  • You are a highly motivated and an enthusiastic researcher;
  • You have obtained a PhD Degree in applied mathematics, operations research, econometrics, industrial engineering, or a related field, with a keen interest in both mathematical research and its applications in healthcare;
  • You are an independent thinker with excellent analytical and communication skills;
  • You have good team spirit and like to work in an internationally oriented environment;
  • You are proficient in English.

We offer

You will be appointed for three years full-time within a very stimulating scientific environment. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues. The terms of employment are in accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU) and include:

  • Gross salary between € 3.353 and €4.402 per month depending on experience and qualifications;
  • Excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, a year-end bonus of 8.3% and a solid pension scheme;
  • Between 29 and 41 leave days in case of full-time employment;
  • Excellent support for research and facilities for professional and personal development.
