Are you a passionate researcher with interest and profound knowledge in the exciting and future oriented field of smart manufacturing? The Department of Design, Production and Management within the Faculty Engineering Technology of the University of Twente has a 2-year opening for an experienced researcher in the field of smart manufacturing systems. More specifically, as one major part of this position you’ll work with innovative applications around real time locating systems (RTLS) in factories. As example, in the project SAIFE we’re addressing solutions for increasing worker safety based on RTLS. In this project you will work closely with research and industrial partners from Germany, Spain and Lithuania. But also beyond that project, your passion and expertise is wanted to support the development and set up of smart manufacturing solutions within our own learning and research factories but also in industrial contexts. Specific fields of action within this position include:

  • Development of innovative digital solutions to improve manufacturing systems;
  • Practical implementation and experimental testing of smart manufacturing solutions in both research and industrial manufacturing environments;
  • Investigate latest developments in the field and writing of related publications;
  • Strong interaction with related internal and external partners.

You will work closely with Prof. Sebastian Thiede (Chair of Manufacturing Systems) but also in interaction with many other colleagues within and beyond the Department of Design, Production and Management.


We are looking for a highly motivated, positive and hardworking researcher with a PhD degree on a topic related to smart manufacturing systems. This ideally includes relevant skills in areas like information and communication technology (hardware, software), programming, data analytics/machine learning and (modelling/designing of) manufacturing systems. We seek candidates with good team spirit and multidisciplinary curiosity, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment where many cultures meet. Proficiency in English is a requirement. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.
